Frequently asked questions about Finasteride

Finasteride - generic for the brand name Propecia - is a prescription medication used to treat prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and male pattern hair loss. It treats these conditions by blocking hormones in the body that can lead to an enlarged prostate and hair loss at the top of the head.

While finasteride is effective in the treatment of male pattern hair loss, it has not been shown to treat thinning hair in women or children. It is also not effective in treating male hair loss near the temples. While finasteride treats two common men’s health conditions - hair loss and prostate enlargement - it has not been approved as a treatment for prostate cancer.

Finasteride has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia), and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. Male pattern hair loss affects nearly 1 out of every 3 men by the age of 35. By 50, nearly 85 percent of men will experience some form of male pattern hair loss. In addition, BPH affects over 40 million American men every year.

Finasteride is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. While it has been approved to treat male pattern hair loss and BPH, it has not been shown as an effective treatment for thinning hair at the temples, or for thinning hair in women and children.

Finasteride belongs to a class of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. These drugs stop the body from converting testosterone - the principal male sex hormone - into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can cause hair loss on the scalp. DHT can also contribute to prostate enlargement. By limiting the body’s ability to produce this hormone, finasteride can help reduce hair loss and manage your prostate.

While you may experience some common side effects while taking finasteride, it is important to remember that your doctor prescribed this medication because its benefits outweigh its side effects.

Adverse effects are generally mild and temporary. Common side effects associated with finasteride may include:

Erectile dysfunction Decreased sex drive Ejaculation problems (such as a decreased volume of ejaculate) Testicle pain

If you experience serious side effects including rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or hives, contact your doctor right away. These effects are very rare but require immediate medical attention.

This is not a complete list of side effects associated with finasteride. For more information on adverse effects you may experience, visit the National Institutes of Health’s DailyMed webpage.

Finasteride will start working immediately to block the production of DHT in the body. It may take some time before you notice finasteride’s effects, but you will start to see results within 3-4 months of beginning treatment.

If you are taking finasteride to treat male pattern hair loss, it may take 6-9 months before you notice the full effects of finasteride on your scalp. This is because the growth cycle for hair takes several months. Do not stop taking finasteride without consulting your doctor. Finasteride only works if administered regularly.

For treatment of BPH, finasteride is prescribed as a 5 mg oral tablet to be taken once a day. For male pattern hair loss, a 1 mg oral tablet is prescribed to be taken once a day. Do not increase your dosage or discontinue your use of finasteride without consulting your doctor.

Finasteride is currently only available via prescription. This means the use of this drug must be authorized by a licensed health care provider.
